Go to your meter. Locate the gas safety shut-off valve at your gas meter and turn it to the ‘off’ position. When the lever is at a correct angle, it is off. If you do not have a meter, you will need to use your car’s odometer to determine how much gas is left in your tank.
If you have an automatic transmission, it will tell you the amount of gas remaining in the tank when you turn the ignition key to start the engine. You can also use the car owner’s manual to find out how many miles are left on your vehicle.

How do you tell if gas shut off valve is off?
