If your pipe has an access plug or drain plug, simply pull it out. You should have your ring with you when the water pours out of the pipe. If you don’t have an access plug, you may have a pipe connection.
Some pipes only have one pipe at one end, while others have both at the other end. If you don’t know what type of pipe you have, you can check the manufacturer’s web site to see if it has a plug at either end. You can also check your local plumbing supply store for plugs.

How do you get a ring out of a sink without taking it apart?
Try attaching a small magnet to a string or small flexible rod that will fit down your drain. If you want to make sure you don’t drop the item again, lower the magnet and pull it back up. If you’re still without your favorite piece of jewelry, try a stronger magnet and see if you can get it to stick.
Can a ring go past the P-trap?
If your ring does not come out with the water from the P-Trap, you might take a flashlight and look up into the pipes that lead in and out of it. In some cases, the ring may have been pushed beyond the P-Trap. If this is the case, you should give the plumbing company a call.
What happens if something goes down the drain?
A steady stream of water running down the drain will do one of two things — it could push the item deeper into your home’s plumbing system or it could cause a flood. If the item is large enough to fill the width of the pipe, any water you add will back up into the sewer system.
If you’re not sure how much water to add to your drain, check with your local water utility to find out the maximum amount you can add. For example, if you live in a city with a municipal water system, you may be able to use up to 1.5 gallons per minute (gal/min) to flush your toilet.
How do you get an earring out of the tub drain?
Take a wet/dry vacuum, empty the canister, set the vacuum cleaner for ‘wet’ use (to avoid any risk of electrocution), then gently vacuum inside the top of the drain. Can a ring go through a garbage disposal?
A ring cannot go through a garbage disposal. The garbage disposals’ walls are too small for a ring to pass through. If the ring is too large, it will not fit through the hole in the wall. This gap is called the “ring gap.” The ring gap should be no more than 1/2 inch (6 mm) in diameter, and it should not be larger than 2 inches (51 mm).
If you are unsure about the size of your ring, you can measure it with a ruler or a tape measure. You can also measure the diameter of a piece of paper or cardboard, which will give you an idea of how big the gap needs to be in order for the rings to fit.
