The drain pipe should be a minimum of 1-1/2″ I.D. (inside diameter) to ensure proper draining. The outside diameter of the washer drain hose is 1-1/4″. The drain plumbing needs to be at least 30″ high in order to be confident that no water will be sucked from it.

Does a washing machine drain need to be vented?
All plumbing fixtures—including washing machines—must be vented. Improperly ventilating drain can be noisy and emit hazardous fumes. P-trap is supposed to prevent sewer gases from escaping into your home. If you have a leaky faucet, you’ll need to replace it with a new one. If you don’t have access to a plumber, or if you live in an apartment or condominium, your landlord may be able to fix the problem for you.
Does a washing machine drain pipe need a trap?
