The easiest way to measure height is with a height mic. The mic is placed over the valve stem and with the retainer and locks installed, turning the barrel will display the actual height. The measurement in this case is 1.5 inches.
If you want to know the exact height of your barrel, you can measure the distance from the muzzle to the center of the bore. This will give you an exact measurement. If you don’t have access to a mic, then you will need to use a digital caliper. You can find these at any hardware store or online.

How do you measure a valve stem on a tire?
Inserting a drill bit into the valve stem hole on your wheel and matching the drill size to the hole size is a route that a lot of people go, so it’s certainly a fine method. If you have a digital caliper, you can measure the diameter of the wheel using the old fashioned route.
If you don’t have access to a Dremel, you can also use a rotary tool to make a small hole in the rim of your tire. This will allow you to drill a hole that’s about the same diameter as the tire’s rim. You’ll need to be careful not to overdo it though, as you’ll end up with a very large hole.
What is valve installed height?
The installed height of a valvespring is the distance from the base of the spring to the bottom of the retainer when the valve is closed. The spring may not be able to open fully if the distance is too great or too short.
If you have a valve spring that is installed too high, you may need to lower it down a little to get it to close properly. You can do this by using a small screwdriver to loosen the retaining nut on the back of your valve. Then you can lower your spring down until it is at the correct height.
How do you measure valve clearance?
The dial indicator should be positioned on the top of the exhaust-valve retainer. Next, depress the exhaust valve. The distance traveled should be noted. You should have an accurate measurement of the gap between the two gaskets if you subtract the difference in gasket thicknesses. If you are using a vacuum pump, you can use the vacuum gauge to measure the amount of vacuum that is being applied to the intake manifold.
The vacuum is measured in pounds per square inch (psi) and is expressed in millibars (mb). If you have a gauge that measures in inches, multiply the number of inches by 1.5 to convert to mb. For example, if you measure in 1/2 inch, then you would multiply that number by 0.75 to get the value in mbs. If the gauge is calibrated, it will give you the correct value.
What should valve guide clearance be?
Intake guides need guide-to-stem clearance of according to a general rule of thumb. If you are using an aftermarket exhaust system, you will want to make sure that you have the correct clearance between the exhaust and intake manifolds. If you do not have a proper clearance, your exhaust will not be able to flow properly and your engine will suffer from poor performance.
Why are shims placed under valve springs?
The springs are made up of two parts, a spring and a shim. It is made of steel and has a diameter of about 1/8″ (3.5mm) and is held in place by a set screw that is threaded on both sides. This is called a “clamp” and it is a very important part.
If the clamp is not tight enough, you will not be able to make the proper contact between the two pieces of spring. In other words, if you don’t have a good clamp, then you are going to have problems with your springs and your car will be very difficult to drive.
Does valve stem length matter?
If your wheels are even deeper than the longest valve you can find, you can buy valve extenders to add an inch or two to the valve’s length. You can make your own extension by cutting a piece of 1/4-inch plywood and drilling a hole in the middle of it. This will allow you to screw the extension into the bottom of your wheel.
Alternatively, if you have a wheel that’s already long enough to accommodate a longer valve, it’s possible to make an extension out of 2x4s and drill a small hole through the center of one of them. Then you’ll just need to drill another hole on the other side, and you’re good to go.
