Do I need a valve extender?
For those riders making use of very high-profile rims like Zipp’s 808, a valve extender will usually be necessary since the rim will be too short to accommodate the extra length.
Are all valve stems the same size?
For most “old car” applications the valve stem hole in the wheel rims come in 3 sizes, which are nominally: – 8mm diameter, observed on some small and Voiturette cars (as well as a few others) – 10mm, on most modern cars – 12mm. In the case of the old cars, the “8mm” size is the most common, and is used in most of them.
The “10mm”, on the other hand, is only used on a very small number of cars. This is due to the fact that it is not possible to make a “12mm valve” for a car of this size, as it would have to be made out of a different material than the one used for the rest of its body.
In fact, it has been known to happen that a valve was made from a piece of metal that was too small to fit into the hole, so it was cut off and replaced with a new one. It is also possible that some of these cars were fitted with valve stems that were too large for their wheels, but this has never been confirmed.
Are all tire valves the same?
For example, if you’re driving a 4×4, you’ll want to use a rubber valve. If you drive a 5-passenger SUV, a high pressure valve may be the best choice. On the other end of the spectrum are vehicles that are designed for off-road use, such as ATVs, snowmobiles and ATV’s.
These vehicles require a higher inflation pressure than a vehicle that is designed to be driven on paved roads. For these vehicles, the rubber or metal valve will be more appropriate.
Can you leave valve extenders on?
Wheelmaster valve extenders like the # WM80294 can be left on when driving. If needed, they would be perfectly fine to be removed and replaced. I would also like to point out that if you are going to remove the wheel master valve, you will need to do so in a way that does not damage the valve.
If you do damage it, it will be very difficult to get it back to working condition. I would suggest that you remove it with a flathead screwdriver and then use a small flat head screw driver to pry it off. This will allow you to re-install it without damaging it.
Does valve stem length matter?
If your wheels are even deeper than the longest valve you can find, you can buy valve extenders to add an inch or two to the valve’s length. You can make your own extension by cutting a piece of 1/4-inch plywood and drilling a hole in the middle of it. This will allow you to screw the extension into the bottom of your wheel.
Alternatively, if you have a wheel that’s already long enough to accommodate a longer valve, it’s possible to make an extension out of 2x4s and drill a small hole through the center of one of them. Then you’ll just need to drill another hole on the other side, and you’re good to go.
What causes valves to rattle when accelerating?
Your car’s intake and exhaust valves can get stuck or wear out. Premature ignition can happen inside the combustion chambers. It can cause a rattling noise similar to the sound created by glass bottles when dropped from a height.
If your car is equipped with a catalytic converter, you may have to replace the intake or exhaust valve on your engine. If you have an aftermarket exhaust system, it may need to be replaced as well.
Do I need a special pump for a Presta valve?
To inflate a presta valve you need a regular air pump and a special accessory. At your local hardware store, you can purchase these for about a dollar. You’ll also need an air compressor, which you can buy for a few dollars at most hardware stores. Once you’ve got the valve in place, it’s time to fill it with air. To do this, you’re going to need to remove the air valve from the pump.
This is done by unscrewing the two screws that hold it on, and then pulling it off. Once you have it out of the way, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it free. Then, using a pair of needle nose pliers, pull it back into place. If you don’t have a plier, just use your fingers to push it in. Be careful not to pull too hard, or you may damage the seal.
Now, fill the tank with fresh air and let it sit for at least an hour. After that time has passed, check to make sure that the pressure has returned to normal. It should be about the same as it was before you filled it, but you should still be able to feel a slight difference in the amount of air that’s being pumped in and out.
Can you pump a Presta valve without an adapter?
If you go to a gas station that has a pump that can inflate both Presta and Schrader valves, you don’t need to buy a new one. If you have a Presto that has an automatic pump, then you can use the same pump to pump both valves. However, if the pump is not automatic, it’s best to use a manual pump.
