Do I need a valve extender?
In the case of tubular tires, a valve extender is an accessory used to extend the length of the valve on a tube. On normal wheels, this is not necessary because the valve is long enough, but on deep-rimmed wheels, the valve must be extended due to the height of the rim.
The most common type is called a valve stem extension. It is usually made of stainless steel or aluminum and has a small hole in it to allow air to flow through the tube.
How long a valve extender do I need?
Adding 15mm to the height of the rim is a reasonable rule of thumb when it comes to deciding on a valve length. It’s important that the extra 15mm is enough to fit any rim size.
For example, if you have a rim that is 1.5″ wide, and you want to make sure that you can fit a 2.0″ rim on it, then you would need to add an additional.75″ to your rim’s height. If you had a 3.25″ diameter rim, you’d need a.85″ height to accommodate it.
The same goes for rim sizes that are larger than 3″ in diameter, such as 4″ and 5″ diameters. Height is the distance from the centerline of a wheel’s rim to its center of gravity. Rims are typically measured in millimeters, which is why they are often referred to as “millimeters” or “inches”.
Rim width, on the other hand, refers to how wide the wheel is compared to a standard rim.
How do you use a Topeak valve extender?
The unit threads onto a stem and you simply press down on the brass tip to open and close the valve. If you would like to use the extender for other purposes, simply close the valve and remove it.
Can you leave valve extenders on?
If you were going to use them with a TPMS sensor, you would want to use a sensor that is “flow through” like the # TST-507-FT-4-C. If you are using a TPS sensor, you will need to make sure that you have the correct type of sensor for your sensor type.
For example, if you’re using an FT4 sensor and you want a flow through sensor then you’ll need a Flow Through Sensor (FT4) or Flow through Sensors (FTS) and install them in the same way as you would any other sensor in your system.
Does valve stem length matter?
If your wheels are even deeper than the longest valve you can find, you can buy valve extenders to add an inch or two to the valve’s length. You can make your own extension by cutting a piece of 1/4-inch plywood and drilling a hole in the middle of it. This will allow you to screw the extension into the bottom of your wheel.
Alternatively, if you have a wheel that’s already long enough to accommodate a longer valve, it’s possible to make an extension out of 2x4s and drill a small hole through the center of one of them. Then you’ll just need to drill another hole on the other side, and you’re good to go.
Are there different size tire valve stems?
Most tire options include a range of sizes for the tubeless rubber snap-in valves. The tubeless valve is designed to be used with a wide variety of tires, including all-mountain, cross-country, mountain, trail, and all terrain tires.
What size hole do I drill for a valve stem?
We all know the most common size on our cars. You can use this hole size with the rubber stem or metal stem that comes with your car. If you have a car with a different type of stem, you may need to adjust the size of the hole to get the correct fit.
