The valves are hard to open. This can occur if the oil has caused debris to loosen in the trumpet valve case. It can be fixed by pulling the valve out and wiping it clean. It will then need to be oiled again before being reinstalled. The valve is too tight. The valve should be loosened by turning it counterclockwise.
If it is not, you will have to re-tighten it. You can do this by using a small screwdriver to turn it clockwise until it clicks into place. Be careful not to over tighten it, as this can cause damage to the valves.

Do trumpets wear out?
Good quality trumpets will last around 60 years when cared for properly. The valve pistons are usually the first thing to break. Trumpets will last close to 100 years if they are well taken care of and haven’t been played a lot. The first thing you need to check is if the valve is cracked. If it’s cracked, you’ll have to replace it. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t have a cracked valve stem.
A cracked stem will cause the trumpet to not be able to sustain the sound it was designed to produce. If you’re not sure if your trumpet is broken, take it to a professional trumpet repair shop and have them check it out for you. They can also give you a good idea of how long it will take to fix the problem.
How do you free up a stuck valve?
With a hyde, wood or plastic mallet, tap the top of the valve stem gently until the piston just starts to move. Install the valve button again and pull. If it doesn’t move, apply a little more heat and tap it a few more times.
If you’re using a plastic valve, you’ll need to remove the plastic cap and replace it with a stainless steel one. You can do this by unscrewing the cap, removing the screw, and then re-inserting it. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this can cause the valves to leak.
Can I use wd40 on my trumpet valves?
You and the horn will be killed by that. It is not a good alternative. It will still work if you spit on the ground. I’m not sure if this is the best way to do it, but I’m going to try it anyway.
Why does my valve keep sticking?
Both of these problems should be fixed by using valve oil. If you have a valve that’s stuck, you’ll need at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart (1 to 2 quarts) of engine oil.
If you don’t have enough oil, your engine may not be able to start, and you may have to take it to a shop to have it checked out.
You’ll also need some anti-freeze to keep the oil from freezing, which is a good idea if you’re going to be driving for a long period of time.
Can you use Vaseline as slide grease?
Pure lanolin (best)/tuning slide grease (good)/Vaseline or petroleum jelly (good in a pinch)-for lubricating tuning slides. Lanolin offers a good balance between ease of motion and holding power. If you’re looking for a lubricant that will last a long time, this is the one to get.
It’s also a good choice if you want to keep your tuning slide lubricated but don’t have the time or money to buy a new one every time you need to change the oil. -For the most part you can use any oil you like; (Check list below)
