Use your socket wrench to start loosening the oil plug. You want the oil to trickle down slowly. Wait until you think you have drained enough oil, then tighten it up. You run the risk of damaging the oil plug if you loosen it too quickly.
Once you’ve drained the excess oil from the engine, it’s a good idea to clean it off with a rag and some compressed air. This will help to remove any dirt and debris that may be stuck to the inside of your engine.

Can too much oil damage engine?
Too much oil can damage your engine. Excess oil should be drained from the engine if you notice it. To make sure the oil level is not too high or too low, we recommend checking your dipstick.
Is it okay to overfill oil a little?
The oil level should not cause problems if it is a little above the full mark. If it’s overfilled by half a quart or more, it’s best to have the oil drained and refilled to the proper level.
Will an extra half quart of oil hurt my engine?
An extra half a quart of oil is not going to hurt the engine. The spinning crankshaft could come into contact with the liquid oil if the crankcase were overfilled.
How long does excess oil take to burn off?
Most engines will burn some oil. One quart of oil in the range of 1,500 miles is considered acceptable by most manufacturers. Some performance vehicles will consume a quart of oil in less than 1,000 miles.
The difference is that the oil filter is replaced with a new one, while the engine oil is changed to a higher grade. This is done to improve the lubrication of the bearings and to reduce the risk of engine damage.
How much is too much oil on dipstick?
The dipstick on most vehicles has low and high marks that indicate the oil level. This shouldn’t be cause for concern if the excess oil is just 1-2 millimeters above the fill line.
If you’re not sure how much oil you have in your car, you can check it by removing the hood and looking at the bottom of the fuel tank. You’ll see a small amount of oil on the tank, but it should be less than 1/4 of an inch.
This is a good indication that you don’t have a full tank of fuel.
Where the drain plug is located?
You can use a work light or flashlight to look under your car. You should be able to see and reach a large nut or plug under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. The oil drain plug has something on it. If you can’t see it, you may need to replace the drain pan.
If you have an aftermarket oil pump, make sure that it is properly installed and that you are using the correct type of oil for your vehicle. For example, if your engine is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, use a synthetic oil (such as Mobil 1, Mobil 2, or Mobil 3) that is designed for use with that engine.
On the other hand, a 3- or 2-stroke engine may require an oil with higher viscosity (i.e., higher boiling point) and/or higher octane rating (e.g., E85, E100, etc.). If your oil is not designed to be used with your specific vehicle, it may be necessary to purchase a new pump.
