Cement and concrete floors provide a good barrier between the car battery and extreme temperature changes that could cause damage to the battery cells, allowing for a longer service life. The battery is also protected from the elements by the use of an air-conditioning system.
The air conditioning system is designed to maintain a constant temperature throughout the entire life of the vehicle. This means that if the temperature drops below a certain level, the air conditioner will automatically turn off and the engine will be shut down.

Why does setting a battery on concrete drain it?
Between the carbon and the pores, together with moisture and a concrete floor, this could potentially lead to a path for the electricity to flow, resulting in the creation of a new type of battery.
“This is the first time that we have been able to create a battery that can be used to store energy in a way that is not limited by the size of the battery itself,” said co-author and University of California, Berkeley, professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering (CMSTSE).
“We have shown that it is possible to use a material that has a very high electrical conductivity, which means it can store a lot of energy, but it does not need to be very large to do so. This opens up a whole new class of batteries that are much more energy-dense than today’s lithium-ion batteries, and we are excited about the potential of these new batteries for a wide range of applications.”
The research was supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the California Institute of Technology (CITER) and Berkeley Lab’s Materials Science and Engineering Center (MSEC).
Should you leave a battery on concrete?
A battery that lasts 4 years in a cold environment would only last 2 years and 8 months in a hot environment. Keeping the battery on a slab of concrete, which can act as a heat sink, might extend the life of a lithium-ion battery by as much as 10 years.
“It’s not just about how long it lasts, it’s how much energy it can store, and how well it does that,” said Dr. Michael J. Sivak, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who was not involved in the research.
Is putting a car battery on the ground bad?
If you store your car or motorcycle battery on the floor, it won’t ruin it. If the car battery is left sitting unmaintained, it will self-discharge. Lead acid batteries are not designed to be stored on concrete floors.

Does cement conduct electricity?
Despite concrete’s low conductivity, current can pass through cement. It will still conduct some electricity and is actually a better conductor than some other nonmetal conductors, such as copper, aluminum, and steel. Cement is also a good conductor of heat, which is why it is used to insulate buildings in hot climates. Cement also conducts electricity, so it can be used as an insulator in some applications.

Is it safe to keep a car battery in the house?
A dark storage closet is a great place to store the battery. Put a small cloth or sheet on the floor before setting it down. Don’t put a car battery on the concrete floor.
If you are storing a battery for a long period of time, it is best to place it in an airtight container with a tight fitting lid. This will keep the air inside the container at a constant temperature, which will help prevent corrosion.
