This valve, although it’s a small component, is crucial for your EVAP system to work properly. Without it, your engine is going to have a hard time working and it will run extremely rich. The air conditioning system is one of the components that can be affected by this rich fuel to air mixture.
If you don’t have this valve installed, you will have to use a fuel injector to inject the fuel into the combustion chamber of the engine. If you are using an aftermarket fuel injection system, this is not a problem. However, if you’re using a factory fuel injected engine, then you’ll need to install a new fuel pump and injectors to make sure that your fuel system is working correctly.
How do you tell if your purge valve is messed up?
A vehicle with a failing evap canister purge valve will show signs of poor engine performance. The engine might feel weak and won’t generate enough power for acceleration. A stalling engine will feel like you’re pressing the pedal down.
If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission may not be able to transfer power to the wheels, resulting in a loss of power. This is especially true if the car has a manual transmission. In this case, you will need to use the clutch pedal to shift gears.

The most common problem with the purge valve is when it sticks. This could cause the “Check Engine” light to come on. For the first few seconds the engine will not start, and then it will start and run normally, in some cars, because of a stuck-open purge valve.
If your car has a manual transmission, you may need to remove the transmission from the car and replace it with a new one. If you have an automatic transmission and the problem persists, it may be time to replace your transmission.
What happens if EVAP purge valve is stuck closed?
If the vapor canister purge valve is stuck closed instead of open, the valve won’t push any fuel vapors back into the engine. Can you fix a purge valve yourself?
Replacing the purge valve yourself is very doable so you can save a few dollars by doing it yourself. If you are replacing the filter, you will need to remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. You can do this by removing the two screws on the bottom of the new filter. If you don’t have access to a drill press, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it off. Be careful not to damage the threads.
Once you have removed the screws, pull out the plastic filter cover and remove it. The filter is held in place by a rubber gasket, so be careful when you pull it out. It is a good idea to have a friend or two help you with this step, as it can be a bit of a pain. Once the rubber filter has been removed, it is time to clean up any debris that may have gotten into the system.
I recommend using a vacuum cleaner to get all the debris out, and then wiping it down with some dish soap and water. This will help prevent any future problems from occurring in the future. Also, be sure to wipe down the inside of your filter before you put it back in.
