Most dishwashers come from the factory with a 6-foot 6-inch drain hose, and nearly all manufacturers allow this hose to be extended to a maximum total length of 8 feet, according to Mike Casey, a licensed plumbing contractor and co-author of Code Check Plumbing.
If you have a dishwasher that has a longer hose than this, you’ll need to make sure that the hose is long enough to reach all the way to the bottom of the drain. If you don’t have enough room to extend it, it’s best to leave it as it is.
Can you shorten drain hose on dishwasher?
To reach the smaller tailpiece on the air gap fitting mounted on the countertop or sink deck, you need to cut the dishwasher drain hose from the dishwasher. To connect the end of the hose to the air gap, use a hose clamps. If you don’t have access to a drill press, you can use a hand drill to drill a hole in the bottom of the sink or counter top.
This will allow you to install the drain hoses. You can also use an electric drill with a 1/4″ drill bit to make the holes for the hose clamps. Be sure to use the correct size hole for your hose. If you are installing a new sink, make sure that the hole is at least 3/8″ in diameter.
How long should the washer drain hose be?

How long should the hose from a dishwasher air gap be?
The tube should be secured tightly to the air gap using a hose clamps. The drain hose or garbage disposal needs to be connected to the air gap. Measure and cut a length of 7/8“ tubing to connect the air gap to either your drain or waste disposal hose.
If you are using a hose clamp, make sure that it is not too long or too short. If the clamp is too tight, you will not be able to tighten it enough to keep the tubing in place.
How high should a dishwasher drain hose be?
Don’t exceed 43” in drain hose height if you want it to drain properly. The easiest way is to use a 1/2″ hose. This will allow you to install the hose at the same height as the sink drain line.
If you do not have access to a 3/4″ or 1″ loop, you will need to drill a hole in the bottom of your sink and then attach the loop to that hole. If you have a sink that has a drain pipe that is longer than 33″, then you may have to cut a piece of pipe to fit into the hole you drilled.
Be careful not to damage the pipe as you cut it.
What happens if washer drain hose is too long?
If the drain hose is too long, it can lead to inadequate water flow through the hose and standing water. The water is trying to travel the length of the hose before it makes it to the standpipe. Foul odors and a bad taste in your mouth can be caused by standing water.
The best way to prevent this is to make sure that your drain pipe is long enough. If you have a long drain line, you may want to consider adding a hose clamp to the end of your line. This will prevent the line from getting stuck in the pipe and will allow you to easily remove it if you need to.
Does dishwasher drain hose need elevated?
A high loop prevents waste water back flowing from your sink to your dishwasher. Standing water at the bottom of the sink can be caused by water running the wrong way through your drain hose if the drain hose is not elevated. If you do not have a high-loop drain, you may want to consider installing one.
